The English departments of Tunisia mourn Chinua Achebe

Chinua ACHEBE, Nigerian novelist, poet, professor, and critic has died today at the age of 82 . Achebe, is considered by millions of readers as the father of African literature, he was one of Africa's best known authors. His 1958 debut novel Things Fall Apart has sold more than 10 million copies. As a postcolonial writer, his novels focus on the traditions of  the Nigerian Igbo society and the clash of Western and traditional African values during and after the colonial era. His style is very much influenced by his native region Igbo oral tradition. His books present a combination of narrative strategies hovering from straightforward narration to folk stories, proverbs, and oratory pastiches. The teaching of Achebe books has become very popular in the English departments of Tunisia with the growing interest of Tunisian post-graduate and post-doctoral researchers in postcolonial studies.  RIP great author, things will not fall apart!
