Tunisia: Policeman Ordered to Stop Work after Checking Governor’s Car in the Street

Tunisian radio, Mosaique FM, has reported, today August 27th 2015, that a policeman working in the Tataouine region (South of Tunisia) has been placed by force on a mandatory leave. Policeman, according to the radio station, affirms that the reason of forcing him to stop work was because he has checked Tatatouin’s governor’s car while the latter was talking in his mobile and driving at the same time. In an intreview delivered to the radio, policeman affirms that he received a telegram from his department ordering him to stop working ten minutes after checking the governor's car.

Both Mosaique Radio and the Facebook page of the Army Special Forces, sustain that the Governor of Tataouine aggressed the policeman both physically and verbally refusing the policeman stopping him. According to the facebook page, governor also called the Tunisian Minister of Interior who has ordered to place the policeman on a mandatory leave.

Policeman, according to the same sources, is intending to sue the governor for having assaulted him verbally and physically while he was doing his job.

In Tunisia, national, regional and local authorities are abide to respect traffic regulations and must not, by any means, be treated in an exceptional way. After getting rid of Ben Ali’s dictatorship and his corrupted system, Tunisian citizens were aspiring for an equalitarian system championing democracy, human rights and the rule of law. It seems that rulers are keen on keeping the same practices based on nepotism, discrimination and non-respect of law. Instead of stopping this policeman from doing his job, I suggest that he should be nominated in the place of the old governor.
